She could not get comfortable on the bed, and was in considerable pain. At one point in the middle of the night she was hurting so bad and was not able to get out a strong enough voice to wake me, so she did the next best thing and called me on my cell phone. (We are separated by about 9 feet!)

Today was better. We worked out a schedule of medications so that the level of the meds in her blood would always be the same. By the end of the day we could see a difference in her level of comfort.

Life just wouldn’t be the same without little Chase and his sweet sincerity. Tonight when he said his prayer, it went something like this:

Chase: "Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for today and playing with Mommy and Daddy and Mean Grandma........."

You just cant’ help but love him. I can't help but remember an old country song, (I don't know the exact words, but you will get the gist) if your going through hell, kepp on going, don't get out.... just keep on going. We're ready to "keep on going"! It's time to go home.
With all the tears and stress, it's time to laugh. After visiting with Fay yesterday, Chase and I went to visit my husband's old mission presidents wife. What a warm little firecracker! When Chase saw her on her driveway, he refused to get out of the car. It took words of flattery and a promised Ironman figure. Even with all that, I had to carry him inside. Once inside he took his time warming up. After ice cream and cupcakes he was comletely losened up as shows in the following conversation:

Chase: I know that lady. (pointing at me) She's my mean grandma. I have another grandma, she's my nice grandma. But she's (pointing to me) my mean grandma.

I wonder what would happen if the police stopped us and Chase said that? Maybe we shouldn't tempt any one!

He should have stayed in the car. Sister Berling fell in love with him!!

Another conversation: My mommy had an owy, and they had to unzip her and take the owy out, then zip her back up!

The first time Chase got to visit his mommy, he spent all his time searching Fay's hospital room. He wouldn't even give mommy a hug, he was on a mission! Finally we asked him what he was looking for. He said he was looking for the knife the doctor used to zip mommy up!

To Fay's Rexburg friends, ask Chase Sunday who his grandma is. The pain was so out of control. It's got to get better. Right? Early this morning radiology came in to get a chest xray. The tech was as bad as they came. She roughly pushed the film canister under Fay without any care for the incision or epidural. When Fay cried out in pain and asked her to stop, she told her she had a job to do and that she had to do it that way. Sometimes it makes me wonder why these people paid money to gain the education needed to do a job that obviously they are not suited for. We are hoping that today will be better. That Fay can get some rest. That mom can get some rest too! Thanks for your prayers and support.

The "real size of the tumor" vs "assumed size"

Today we found out that the tumor, which was thought to be about 9X9X9 cm was really 14X12X12 cm. She has not been able to manage the pain and is suffering from no sleep which makes the her pain even harder to take. Fay was on so much methadone, that she has built up a tolerance to some of her narcotics they are trying to use for pain management. They have her off the PCA machine (that's the "patient pushes the button herself and gets enough morphine to last 10 minutes" machine. She pushed every 10 minutes, and was still not doing well). They are working with IV push morphine combined with oral tablet. We are hoping that at some point things will start to work and she can get some rest.

Scratch the "pretty rough". She is so miserable that I heard her swear out loud while crying in pain. I'm her mom, I am not happy with her nurse tonight. Her PO2 is down to 75, with the alarm going off, and I don't feel like she is concerned enough. Fay will kill me for saying this, but until she does, I'll feel better "for having" said it!

Tome for some pics!

Fay is sitting up!!!! She is sitting up this morning and if there is room out on the Cardiac-Thoracic floor, they will move her out of ICU (yeah!) Fay is scheduled for surgery at University of Utah on March 2nd. One of the biggests risks that will be encountered in this surgery is blood loss. The tumor is large and large tumors are often fed with quite an extensive vascular supply of blood. We will keep everyone updated as we get more information. Once Fay is in surgery, we will update as often as we can. Your prayers for Fay, Jared, Chase and Fay's doctor, Dr. Bull, are always so appreciated. They have strengthened us all. Your prayers have given us the strength to keep going when quitting sounds so much easier. Talk about a day filled with up and downs. The neurologists who were called in to consult, (neurology feels there is spinal involvement. But Dr. Bull does not really believe that, he feels the tumor is resting in an incostal nerve, and that is what is causing the pain.) feel that if the surgery goes Fay will loose the baby. Tumors of this size can be (doesn't mean it will be) very vascular. The blood lose would cause Fay to abort the baby. Neurology feels that Anesthesia can work with Fay with different forms of blocks that will allow her to manage her pain until she can give birth. This can present a problem too, how long do you wait? The doctor and Fay have agreed to give it two weeks. Then we might be back here again. The best senario is that the pain is managed and Fay can move on for a while. If not, we come do it all over again!

Fay, January 26

Fay had a rough night last night. We all hoped that the spinal block would help her control the pain she was feeling. During the night the pain increased to a point that it was no longer controllable or tolerable. Today they increased the strength of the block and also gave her Oxy-Cotton to get her through the rough times. Tonight she was experiencing some discomfort but was fine with it. Her surgery is tomorrow at 4:00pm Mountain time. I will post as often as I hear how she is doing. Remember she will be in ICU following surgery and then onto the Cardiac Unit when she is stable enough. Please keep her in your prayers. Those prayers have helped strengthen her as well as her family. Fay and Jared's wild little one told grandma (that's me) that I could go home now. So before I tell you what happened, I want you each to know that we believe when all is said and done, Fay will be okay.
We met with the surgeon today. He was very kind to Fay. We discussed what the surgery was going to involve and the magnitude of what needed to be done. The tumor is very large. Because of the size, they believe it will be very vascular also. This type of tumor usually presents itself with no pain. When there is pain, then comes the likelihood, that even though the biopsy came back negative, they're is a malignancy. The other reason for such intense pain is that possibly the tumor is involved with the spinal chord.

Fay was admitted today and a Thoracic nerve block was performed. (I don't think I said that right, but it's an epideral block, but higher up the spine.) When I left Fay tonight, she was comfortable. It has been a long two weeks of very intense pain. Surgery is set for Wednesday afternoon. From Surgery, Fay will be admitted into ICU. We hope to have her home in a week. The doctor said this surgery is in magnitude to that of open heart surgery.

Again, even with the blow we received today of the likelihood of a malignancy, we can't help but feel, when all is said and done, that Fay will be okay. If she needs more treatments after the birth of this little one, it will be okay. Please continue your prayers. They are a great support to us and Fay.

Fay had a rough night and rough morning. The tumor really has caused her a lot of pain. But the last couple of days, she has had a window of time in the middle of the day where she doesn't feel really bad. We like those times. Her doctor is changing her pain meds so they can find one that will take more of the pain away. We are all looking forward to this tumor thing being gone. During her better part of the day, we talked about having a "Schwannoma Fare Well". We'll see how tomorrow goes. Please don't quit on your prayers in her behalf. They are such a support for all of us. This is one of the greatest lessons I have learned., I had never looked at prayer as being a service. There have been days that I had no desire to run at all, but did so because she was going to. It has been more difficult to stay in shape than it was last year. To train for these very long races is time consuming. To many times I have ended a run telling myself that that was my last run. Thursday's run was the same. I was running 10 miles. I carried my water (since I have had one home owner tell me "no" when I have knocked on their door begging for water), it was very muggy and a terrible morning. When I finished and looked at my time, I realized that an old person using a walker could go faster than I was going. So that was it. I got some Gatorade down me and then tore up my training log that I faithfully had kept this last 6 months. I love you Fay, but not even you can convince me to start up my training again. You will just have to come to grips with the fact that you are faster than me, at last! I am going to enjoy the rest of the summer and getting in 100's of miles on my bike.

Christmas Memories 2

My husband had to prepare to speak in church. He was assigned to speak about Christmas and the Christ. He had sent out emails to each of the children asking them what their memories of Christmas were. He asked them if one or two Christmas experiences stuck out. I had a lot of fun reading them and going back in time, when the children were young and still thought that mom and dad were cool Both our girls said the Christmas that really stood out was the Christmas they got a trampoline. It was amazing how the two girls said just about the same thing, word for word! This topic of favorite Christmas' started me thinking. What was my favorite Christmas, and did one stick out?

Yes, one did stick out for me. It was a Christmas that stood out for Melissa too. It was the Christmas that two of our children were serving missions. (That is why it stood out for Mel, she was one of our missionaries.) That Christmas, we had only one child home, and she was home just for the holiday and would be returning to BYU-I. We put the tree up on my birthday, the 17th. It was not very a jolly time either. Try as I could, I was missing my two missionaries. Our youngest child, Fay, picked up on this and put her arm around me telling me to cheer up, because the next Christmas was just around the corner. I survived the tree!

On Christmas day we did something very out of normal. We gave up our Christmas dinner and worked all afternoon and evening at a homeless shelter. It was very hard work to prepare all the food to feed the tenants. But what I liked best of all, was the behavior of our Fay. She was busy actually filling plates up and bringing them to the individuals. I often saw her place her hand on someone elses hand and saw her speak words of encouragement to them. I saw a beautiful young woman care for others, more than she cared for herself. It's no wander she is a nurse, taking care of others.

Christmas Memories

Christmas morning in our family meant that the children could come down stairs AFTER 7:30 am. They would wake up much earlier, but Christmas didn’t start until 7:30. They were then allowed to open their stocking and then we had breakfast. Breakfast was always Rice Pudding. This was a tradition Mark brought home from serving a mission in Norway. Hidden in the rice pudding was an almond. (Remember, Fay always got it) Whoever got the almond was awarded a dollar. This last year Mark took me to Disney World. While there we found a wonderful cookbook from Norway. I finally was able to make the Rice Pudding, or Rice Cream in Norway, the right way. I made it today just as a practice run before the real thing on Christmas morning. It was so easy, and I have never tasted anything like this! I am attaching the recipe, so you can use it too, if you carry on this tradition. It can be easily made the day before and left in the fridge. I love you all and had lots of fun getting phone calls from each of you today. The girls are still wondering how Thom managed to beat them all! Gotta love that boy!

From a kitchen in the Antartic? (We are in the middle of a blizzard here!)
Love you tons
Mom

Rice Cream
¾ C long grain rice, not minute rice
½ t salt
4 C Whole milk (I used skim and it was just fine)
½ C Sugar
1 t almond extract
1 pint whipping cream, whipped and sweetened to taste
½ C chopped almonds
1 whole almond

Cook the rice and salt in milk in a double boiler until rice is soft and mixture is thick, about 1.5 hours. (I ended up cooking it for 2 hours. You can make your own double boiler by putting a smaller pot into a larger pot.) Add sugar and almond extract. Chill. Add chopped almonds and the whole one. Stir in the whipped cream.

But the real reason for writing this is thst I wanted to share an experience. Since our last RS general meeting where President Uchtdorf spoke about service, I have many times, planned my day around what I could do to bring a smile to someone's face. Last Monday, we had 70 mph winds and had ice and compact snow in parking lots. At Fred Meyers I got out of my car and started my trek to the store, when I saw a very elderly lady trying to get to the store also and without falling. She had a cane and was leaning on it very heavily. I walked up beside her, and linked arms with her and told her how difficult this weather makes it to get to the stores. We walked all the way to the store like that. I had never met her before, but on that day, I showed an older lady some respect and care that she deserved and most of all, I put a smile on her face!

moms bread

When my parents were married in 1945, there were not a whole lot of material conveniences to bring into a new household. But mom had a unique way of making Dad and others feel loved and cared for. She baked home made bread.
There is nothing more inviting and mouth watering as coming home to the aroma of home made bread, and Mom's recipe made four beautiful loaves. But Mom did something very special with her bread, she always gave the prettiest loaf away.
In 1962, when I was seven years old, my Dad suffered a massive heart attack. He was unable to work for more than a year. Not only did we come close to losing Dad, but we lost most everything else. We lost Dad's business, our extra car, the boat, the trailer, and almost our house. However Mom found enough work to keep us fed and even managed to make her bread, always giving the prettiest loaf away.
One of the jobs Mom worked was as a row-boss in a berry field. The days were very long, and the sun would always burn her. In fact she was often called Dorothy, the Red-Nosed Row-Boss. After a few years of this, she found a job as a dental assistant. Though the workday was long and Mom was tired when she came home, she still made time to bake her, bread and to give the prettiest loaf away.
I will never forget the day when Mom called me into the kitchen to teach me the fine art of bread making. She carefully told me of each ingredient, taught me how to knead and to shape the dough into loaves. But the most important part was to give the prettiest loaf away.
When I was a senior in high school my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a Radical Mastectomy and then went through Chemotherapy and Radiation. She lost her hair numerous times, she suffered terrible burns from the radiation, but all through these hard times she continued to bake her bread and to give the prettiest loaf away.
Mom's condition deteriorated as her cancer metastasized and it became increasingly difficult to keep up with her bread making. Normally, after Mom gave a loaf of bread away, the remaining three loaves lasted about one week. One day Mom realized that she could not give a loaf away and still have the energy to make enough bread for she and Dad to last the week. Our family all agreed that it was time to think of herself first. The day the decision was made to not give a loaf away, Mom went about her baking. She did nothing different, she used the same recipe, adding nothing extra. But while the bread was rising, Mom decided that she really did need to give a loaf away. This tradition was so ingrained in her life style, that she could not let it go. As Mom went to shape the dough into loaves, she found there was too much dough for the four regular loaves. In fact there was just enough dough for a fifth loaf! Mom could give the prettiest loaf away and still have enough bread for she and Dad to last the week.
From that day forth, Mom's recipe made five loaves. The day arrived when she was too weak to get out of bed to make the bread herself. Dad called me to come home to help Mom. Her time left here on earth was very near over. I took over mom's bread making that day, with Mom passing away a few days later. I have continued Mom's legacy, but try as I may, I cannot get mom's recipe to produce any more than four loaves. Is it missing some secret ingredient? No, miracles do happen. “…for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men…” (Moroni 7:37) I know this, because I have witnessed it.

Mom Dennis' Bread Recipe
1/2 C water (warm)
5 C hot water
1 C brown sugar
6 tsp. salt
1/2 C oil
16 C flour
Soften yeast in 1/2 C warm water, Combine hot water', brown sugar., salt, oil and 4 Cups flour, beat well. Add yeast. Beat well, Add remaining flour. Knead. Let rise twice.
Makes 4 loaves.
Cook at 375 for 30 minutes.
